Coding for pyloric and abdominal ultrasound

Q.

Are there separate CPT codes for pyloric ultrasound (US) and an abdominal ultrasound? If so, can these be charged separately if ordered on the same day and performed at the same session, or is it all considered to be part of an US of the abdomen?

A.

You would report only the appropriate US abdomen CPT code (once). While there are required elements for a complete US abdomen, other abdominal areas seen are included, when seen at the same session. If you did a stand-alone pyloric ultrasound on a different day, it would be limited abdominal ultrasound 76705. Additionally, it is incorrect to code a limited exam and a complete exam at the same time.
