Coding for ultrasound of a groin-area hematoma after a catheter procedure for pseudoaneurysm

Q.

I am looking to clarify what ultrasound code or codes would be appropriate to assess for a groin area hematoma after a catheter procedure to look for pseudoaneurysm.

A.

If an arterial duplex scan is performed, then CPT code 93926 is reported. If a venous duplex scan is performed, then report CPT code 93971. If a duplex scan is not performed, then CPT code 76882 would be reported.

If the imaging shows a pseudoaneurysm and you then use ultrasound compression to repair it, you would assign CPT code 76936, which includes the diagnostic evaluation, and none of the above codes would be reported.
