Complete ultrasound of the abdomen — required and additional elements for coding

Q.

We are seeing CPT® code 76700, abdominal ultrasound (US) complete performed and CPT code 76705, abdominal US limited ordered/performed for the appendix. Can we assign both codes since the appendix is not one of the elements of an abdominal US?

A.

No, you cannot report CPT codes 76700 and 76705 for exams performed at the same session. Imaging of the gallbladder, common bile duct, liver, pancreas, spleen, both kidneys, abdominal aorta, and inferior vena cava are required elements for assignment of CPT code 76700. But if other parts of the abdomen are seen, those elements are included in CPT 76700 as well. You would not report code 76700 for the required elements and CPT code 76705 for additional elements evaluated.
