For EKGs, you cannot take credit for the review for the E&M, only the order, as the review is included in the payment for the EKG codes

Q.

When an EKG is ordered and read during the office visit, does that count as two points for the new Evaluation and Management (E/M) coding?

A.

For EKGs, if you are submitting CPT code 93000 or 93010 as well as an E&M service for the provider, you can only give one point towards the E&M as these two codes include the interpretation and the report and the provider must review the strip to do the interpretation and report. You cannot take credit for the review for the E&M, only the order, as the review is included in the payment for the EKG codes 93000 and 93010.
