Medical necessity determines justification for additional ECGs following a percutaneous coronary intervention

Q.

As a follow-up to another question regarding diagnostic electrocardiograms (ECGs), would the diagnosis of post-coronary intervention as an indication after a cardiac procedure be considered diagnostic or would a specific diagnosis such as arrhythmia be needed?

A.

“Post PCI” would indicate that it was a routine follow-up and not separately billable. There must be a medically necessary clinical indication for an ECG.
