Radiologist interpreting hystersonograms is acceptable with level 3 supervision

Q.

Our hospital has an obstetrics provider-based office that performs ultrasounds. A separate radiology group (not hospital-owned) interprets the ultrasounds. Is it acceptable for the radiologist group to interpret the hystersonograms as there is not a radiologist in the building at the time of the procedure?

A.

Yes, the radiologist can interpret the exams (CPT® code 76831-26). However, for the facility to bill the technical component of CPT 76831 there must be an appropriate supervising physician in the room when the exam is being performed. CPT code 76831 has a supervision level of 3 – personal supervision.
