Coding for a limited area planar scan is done in addition to SPECT or SPECT/CT

Q.

If we perform planar lymphatic imaging and add SPECT/CT imaging, do we report 78195 and 78830? What about a Meckel’s scan (78290), can we add 78830 if we also do SPECT/CT?

A.

As with all body areas except for those that still have body area single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) codes (e.g., parathyroid or myocardial perfusion exams), if a limited area planar scan is done in addition to SPECT or SPECT/CT, you only assign a CPT® code for the appropriate SPECT or SPECT/CT scans.

For your specific examples, you cannot report CPT code 78830 in addition to CPT codes 78195 or 78290, you only assign CPT code 78830.
