If performing a limited planar scan with SPECT or SPECT/CT imaging, assign only the SPECT or SPECT/CT CPT code

Q.

It is understood that if you perform a planar study, you are to submit only one CPT® code? If you perform both a planar exam with a SPECT or SPECT/CT scan, will two CPT codes be assigned?

A.

The rule about planar and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) still applies for coding purposes. That is, if you perform a limited planar scan with SPECT or SPECT/CT imaging, then you assign only the SPECT or SPECT/CT CPT code. Only if you perform a whole-body planar study with SPECT or SPECT/CT imaging do you get to report two CPT codes.
